The Colleges Ontario Network for Industry Innovation (CONII) is an applied research and development network - based at 10 of
Ontario's leading postsecondary institutions - aimed at helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) solve technical problems,
adapt new technologies for the marketplace, and develop new or improved products and processes.
It's all part of the Ontario government's plan to help speed up the R&D process, move products to market more
quickly, and enhanced the province's competitiveness in the global marketplace.
Applied R&D activities are coordinated through College Industry Innovation Centres
(CIICs), which are housed within existing college research offices. CIICs are the first point of contact for SMEs seeking R&D services.
This $3.5 million program, funded by the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation,
provides financial support to colleges, which gives SMEs faster access to the expertise of Ontario's
top researchers, as well as to the latest sophisticated equipment and research tools that exist within these institutions.
The research undertaken by the CONII may focus on the economic sectors identified as
priorities by the provincial government, including but not limited to:
Alternative and Renewable Energy
Construction
Digital Media
Environmental Technologies
Health and Life Sciences
Hospitality and Tourism
Information and Communication Technologies
Manufacturing and Materials
Viticulture and Agri-Business
When a business contacts a CIIC, the R&D needs of the company are assessed.
The college works with the company, can involve other colleges, or may make referrals to other CONII partners as required.
