Project Manager/Industry Liaison
Full-time contract position, ending October 31, 2012
With possibility of extension
Salary range: $75,000 – $80,000 per annum
Summary of Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Research Services, this position is responsible for leading applied research and commercialization initiatives to help small- and medium-sized enterprises move promising products, practices and processes from the R&D stage to the marketplace. The Project Manager/Industry Liaison will create an awareness of the initiative and conduct outreach to internal and external audiences, identify, develop and negotiate projects with small- and medium-sized enterprises, and monitor and report outcomes.
Key duties include the following:
- Conduct outreach with business and industry contacts, and promote to college faculty and staff
- Identify opportunities for applied research and commercialization projects with small- and medium-sized enterprises
- Conduct initial assessments with potential business and industry contacts to determine eligibility
- Maintain expected service standards for business and industry with respect to timelines for decisions and related actions
- Develop research plans with business and industry based on sound research principles and external funders’ mandates
- Monitor and report on research plans against established milestones utilizing sound project management principles
- Provide leadership and supervision to staff and/or faculty principal investigators and to student research assistants by determining work priorities/assignments and approval of staff scheduling
- Represent Durham College at related functions
- Seek other funding opportunities to support business and industry partners and/or Durham College stakeholders and complete grant proposals.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of a Masters degree with a focus on research and commercialization and at least five successful years experience in research and relationship management. Sound knowledge of Durham College programs is required. Sound knowledge of research design and methodology and proven ability assessing opportunities in a variety of science and technical disciplines are required. Experience in intellectual property management, technology transfer, contract negotiation, technology development, and commercialization is a must.
Required skills include: business and industry liaison skills; superior oral and written communication skills and presentation skills; research, analytical, negotiation, entrepreneurial, organizational, project management and interpersonal skills; proficiency in MS Office tools including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint, and internet applications; willingness to travel. Knowledge of provincial and federal funding opportunities and experience in developing research proposals will be considered a strong asset. Must possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence and regular access to a vehicle.
