Position Summary Applied Research and Innovation Centre (ARIC)
The Technology Transfer Officer will report to the Director, Applied Research and Innovation Centre (ARIC), Centennial College, and will provide project expertise and legal advice on the start-up, execution and completion of several new projects supported by NSERC CCI funding. This is a part-time contract position for one year, with the option for renewal of the contract for subsequent one-year terms. The projects will aim to deliver Technology Solutions for Healthcare Management and Health Research and Promotion and will engage Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) working in partnership with ARIC.
Responsibilities will include assessing opportunities for technological innovation and commercial potential based on thorough analysis of the business credentials of potential industry partners, business plans, the relevant market segment and the competition. The Officer will work cooperatively with and assist the ARIC Innovation Manager for NSERC CCI projects, developing and disseminating outreach materials for technology transfer both within the College and externally to SMEs and stakeholders in government and academia. Project expertise will include scoping of projects and defining deliverables to fit within prescribed budget and timelines. Legal advice will cover Intellectual Property (IP) management, licensing agreements, patents and terms and conditions of contracts drawn up for the collaborative projects.
Responsibilities Manages, develops and deploys technology transfer initiatives in support of the NSERC CCI projects including, without limitation, proactively seeking and identifying opportunities for the commercialization of applied research with SMEs in the healthcare industry sector; assessing potential technology solutions with techniques such as SWOT analysis and Porter’s Five Forces; conducting market intelligence research; reporting on findings and providing “go/no go” recommendations on collaborative projects; creating templates, as required, to document collaborations in technology transfer such as project proposals, contract Agreements and process maps.
Advises the ARIC Director and Innovation Manager on IP management especially related to terms and conditions of contract Agreements negotiated between ARIC and industry partners, identifies opportunities for and enables licensing agreements and patent filing, executes the filing of provisional patents if necessary and if supported by funding sponsors. Further advises on confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreements with all project collaborators.
Builds a network of industry partners and Post-Secondary Institution (PSI) collaborators by conducting information sessions and workshops, representing ARIC at meetings, conferences and tradeshows related to technology transfer, developing and giving presentations on technology transfer both internally to the College community and externally, contributing to the design and development of marketing collateral such as website content and brochures, and compiling a distribution and contacts list of professionals, businesses and institutions for information exchange in support of technology transfer.
Provides leadership to ARIC and the College community by communicating and advocating the commercialization of applied research through success stories and reports supported by performance metrics compiled during execution of the NSERC CCI projects.
Qualifications B.Sc. in Science and/or Engineering, preferably related to the Life Sciences and ICT. M.Sc. is an asset.
Minimum 3 years experience in technology transfer and the commercialization of applied research with industry partners, Intellectual Property management, contract analysis, writing business plans, market analysis, and grant application writing.
Minimum 2 years in project management with clients and stakeholders in academia, government and business. Business experience in a technology company and proven marketing skills.
Skilled in research and analysis, consultative selling, decision making, client and stakeholder relationships, and working effectively in a highly diverse College community.
Well-rounded oral and written communication skills required to engage and present to all levels of the College, College Committees, external stakeholders and Government representatives.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite and ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks, and meet competing deadlines.
